Frequently asked questions about Public VCF as-a-Service

What is Public VCF as-a-Service?

Public VCF as-a-Service is a fully managed VMware cloud service delivered on shared infrastructure. It is built on VMware Cloud Director (VCD), which is included in VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). The service provides a public cloud consumption model with built-in availability, storage, and simplified operations.

How does Public VCF as-a-Service work?

Public VCF as-a-Service is a fully managed VMware Cloud Foundation as-a-Service platform delivered on shared infrastructure. It provides a scalable cloud environment where organizations can run and manage VMware workloads without dealing with the underlying hardware or operational complexity.

Customers access dedicated virtual resources including compute, storage, and networking through VMware Cloud Director (VCD), which acts as the centralized cloud management interface. From VCD, teams can deploy and manage virtual machines, configure networking, manage user access, and monitor workloads in real time.

Built on a multi-tenant architecture, environments remain logically isolated while benefiting from the cost efficiency of shared infrastructure. OVHcloud manages the underlying platform operations, including hardware, VMware licensing, lifecycle management, maintenance, and security updates, allowing teams to focus on applications and workloads instead of infrastructure management.

Integrated automation and orchestration capabilities simplify cloud operations and resource management. Resources can scale on demand, including vCPU, RAM, and storage, helping organizations support changing workload requirements and extend environments into hybrid cloud architectures.

Is Public VCF as-a-Service hosted on public or private cloud infrastructure?

Public VCF as-a-Service is a public cloud offering built on VMware Cloud Foundation and delivered on OVHcloud-managed shared infrastructure. It provides a scalable cloud platform where physical infrastructure is shared while each customer environment remains logically isolated.

Virtual resources including compute, storage, and networking are fully isolated from other tenants through VMware Cloud Director’s multi-tenant architecture. This helps deliver strong data protection, security, and access control while maintaining an experience similar to a private cloud environment.

This model is ideal for organizations looking to benefit from the economics and scalability of public cloud without sacrificing VMware compatibility, workload isolation, or operational consistency.

For organizations requiring fully dedicated environments, OVHcloud also offers Managed VMware vSphere.

What is the difference between Public VCF as-a-Service and Managed VMware vSphere?

The primary difference is the infrastructure model and level of control.

Public VCF as-a-Service runs on fully managed shared infrastructure. It abstracts much of the underlying networking, storage, and availability complexity, allowing organizations to consume VMware resources directly through VMware Cloud Director without the overhead of managing the underlying stack. It is a cost-efficient option well suited for organizations prioritizing simplicity and operational agility.

Managed VMware vSphere is a dedicated private cloud solution built on reserved infrastructure. It delivers a full software-defined data center (SDDC) experience with direct access to vSphere for compute virtualization, vSAN for storage, and NSX for networking and security. This provides greater control, deeper customization, advanced architecture flexibility, and granular resource management.

In short, Public VCF as-a-Service focuses on simplicity and operational efficiency on shared infrastructure, while Managed VMware vSphere provides dedicated resources and greater infrastructure control.

How do I deploy Public VCF as-a-Service?

Getting started with Public VCF as-a-Service is fast and straightforward. Through the OVHcloud Control Panel, organizations can deploy their environment on scalable cloud infrastructure in just a few steps by selecting a Standard or Advanced (coming soon) starter pack and placing an order.

Virtual data centers (vDCs) are provisioned in less than 10 minutes and can be managed through VMware Cloud Director, enabling rapid deployment of virtual machines and workloads.

Preconfigured Linux and Windows virtual machine templates are available to accelerate deployment and simplify operations from day one.

How do I migrate to Public VCF as-a-Service?

Public VCF as-a-Service is designed to simplify migration from existing VMware environments, including on-premises infrastructure and other VMware Cloud Director deployments.

Because the platform is fully compatible with the VMware ecosystem, and soon-to-be with VMware Cloud Director Availability (VCDA) as well, organizations can migrate existing virtual machines, templates, configurations, and workloads without rearchitecting applications or changing operational workflows.

OVHcloud Professional Services can assist with migration planning and execution to enable near seamless workload migration and hybrid cloud strategies by extending existing VMware environments into OVHcloud infrastructure.

How do I manage Public VCF as-a-Service?

Public VCF as-a-Service is managed through VMware Cloud Director (VCD), a web-based interface designed for cloud management, workload deployment, and resource orchestration.

Through VCD, organizations can provision virtual machines, configure networking, manage user permissions, and monitor workloads in real time. It provides centralized visibility and management across cloud resources, environments, and access controls through a single interface.

The OVHcloud Control Panel complements VCD by allowing customers to manage subscriptions, adjust resources, configure security settings, and access support services.

For automation, Public VCF as-a-Service supports API-driven operations and orchestration workflows, enabling integration with DevOps tools and simplifying provisioning, scaling, workload management, and infrastructure optimization.

What is the difference between VMware Cloud Director and vCloud Director?

There is no functional difference. VMware vCloud Director was renamed VMware Cloud Director starting with version 10.1 in April 2020. The name change reflects its role within the VMware Cloud ecosystem and the VMware Cloud Provider Program.

VMware Cloud Director continues to provide multi-tenant cloud management, automation, and integration with vSphere and NSX.

What is the pricing model for Public VCF as-a-Service?

Public VCF as-a-Service uses a transparent pack-based pricing model designed to provide predictable and cost-efficient access to VMware Cloud Foundation on OVHcloud infrastructure.

The service is available through Standard and Advanced (coming soon) starter packs with fixed monthly pricing. Each pack includes a defined set of resources such as compute, storage, bandwidth, IP addresses, lifecycle management, security features, VCDA migration services (coming soon), and support. This bundled approach simplifies cost management and helps organizations avoid unexpected infrastructure expenses.

Additional resources can be consumed on demand, allowing organizations to scale environments based on workload and business requirements while maintaining visibility and control over infrastructure costs.

With no upfront hardware investment and predictable monthly billing, Public VCF as-a-Service provides a scalable VMware cloud platform designed to help organizations modernize VMware environments while optimizing operational efficiency and budget predictability.

How does Public VCF as-a-Service differ from public cloud computing?

Public VCF as-a-Service is built on VMware Cloud Foundation and is designed to run highly available VMware virtual machines on shared infrastructure. It focuses on predictable performance, security, and VMware-native operations.

By contrast, general public cloud platforms offer a broader ecosystem of managed services, such as databases and platform services, but are less specialized for VMware-centric workloads.

What happens if a server fails?

Public VCF as-a-Service includes built-in high availability capabilities designed to support infrastructure resilience and workload continuity.

In the event of a host failure, workloads are automatically restarted on healthy infrastructure resources to minimize downtime. Live migration capabilities also allow workloads to move between hosts without interruption during maintenance operations or infrastructure incidents.

The service is backed by a 99.95% SLA and includes ongoing updates, maintenance, and security patching managed by OVHcloud. These capabilities help support data protection, service reliability, and consistent performance for business-critical workloads.
