How is my data stored?
Your backups are stored on OVHcloud Object Storage, built on S3-compatible** technology. To protect your data against hardware or site failures, Backup Agent applies anti-affinity rules — meaning your backup data is stored across separate physical infrastructures and locations. You can an independent vault in either our Hillsboro or Vint Hill data centers, helping to ensure isolation between your environments while maintaining redundancy and resilience by design.
Can you explain how a vault works?
A vault is a secure, isolated storage space where your backed-up data is safely stored. It’s built on OVHcloud’s Object Storage technology and fully compatible with the S3 protocol. Each vault provides a highly durable and protected environment, with encryption and immutability automatically enabled to help ensure your data remains safe and unchanged.
All information stored in a vault is encrypted by default and designed to help prevent unauthorized access. Backups are also immutable, meaning data cannot be altered or deleted once written, helping strengthen protection against accidental deletion, corruption, or ransomware-related events while supporting reliable data recovery.
When the Service is first activated, OVHcloud automatically creates a vault in a region different from your Bare Metal server. This design follows a geo-redundancy policy, distributing data across regions to enhance resilience and availability.
Specifically:
- For Bare Metal Servers in US, the Vault is located in a US data center.
- For Bare Metal servers in Europe, a Vault may be created in another European country.
- For Bare Metal servers in Canada, the Vault is located in a Canadian data center.
- For Bare Metal servers in Asia-Pacific, a Vault may be created in a different country within the region.
By storing data in a separate location from your server, OVHcloud helps ensure added protection, redundancy, and peace of mind for your backups.
How can I monitor my backups?
You can monitor backups from your centralized console. You also receive daily emails regarding your backup status and flagging potential issues.
What Service Level Agreement (SLA) does OVHcloud guarantee for access to Object Storage?
For access to the Object Storage service, the availability SLA is 99.9% in 1-AZ by default. For further information, please refer to the Terms of Service.
How does billing work?
Billing practices are similar to those of Object Storage (per storage capacity used per hour, billing at end of the month).
Is Backup Agent available for servers hosted outside the United States?
Not currently. Backup Agent only supports servers hosted in the US region at this time. When adding a server, only US-hosted servers will appear in the selection list. Support for other regions is coming in the future.
