NSX Infrastructure Architecture Overview
NSX Edge nodes deployed in your cluster
VMware Software-Defined Network (NSX) runs on virtual machines called NSX Edge nodes. By default, 2 NSX Edge Medium nodes are rapidly deployed in your environment for all Network Security Virtualization and Software-Defined Data Center ranges. Additional nodes can be added and tailored to your needs.
Deploy More NSX Edge Nodes
Advanced networking and security architectures rely on multiple NSX Edge nodes. Deploy additional NSX Edge nodes (up to 10) in a virtual data center (VDC). NSX Edge nodes must be deployed in the same-size pairs.
Options:
- M–4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM
- L+ – 8 vCPU and 32 GB RAM
- XL – 16 vCPU and 64 GB RAM
Check the resource requirements of NSX Edge VMs to choose the right sizing for your Edge nodes.
Scaling NSX Edge Nodes
Resize NSX Edge nodes to handle your network and security workload.

Take advantage of VMware NSX for all your OVHcloud services
Seamlessly manage the network and security for all your OVHcloud services, whether they are hosted on a Hosted Private Cloud, Public Cloud, or dedicated server, once you've connected VMware NSX to your vRack private network. Implement security measures with ease through these innovative integrations of technologies.
NSX Use Cases
Micro-segmentation for your network architecture
Whether you're securing critical services with VMware's service-defined firewall, creating logical DMZs in software, or minimizing cyberattack vulnerabilities, NSX Data Center enables you to apply uniform network security policies across all workloads.
Advanced Network and Security Toolkit
VMware NSX is an advanced Software-Defined Network solution for applications and data. It provides a consistent network security service with many features such as distributed firewall, load balancing, NAT, DHCP, and VPN.
Networking with full cloud automation
Accelerate application delivery with templates that automate network and security service provisioning and management across all locations and the cloud. You may also provide Infrastructure as Code (API, Terraform).
Networking for Application Modernization
Utilize end-to-end networking and security for your containerized applications, microservices, and virtual machines. Get container-native networking, micro-segmentation, and observability for Kubernetes.

Your questions answered
What is a Software-Defined Network?
Software-defined network (SDN) is a network management approach that utilizes a software control plane to configure a central network and integrate both hardware and software. It enables consistent and comprehensive network management, helping management teams reduce network complexity, automate processes, and enhance compatibility.
In an SDN, software controllers centralize the control plane by managing the flow of network traffic and determining how packets are transmitted. The centralization of resources simplifies the management and automation of network resources.
VMware NSX is a Software-Defined Network (SDN).
What is an NSX Edge node?
To put it simply, an Edge node is a virtual switch. Its role is strictly data-driven, helping provide connectivity to the external/physical network, and cannot be directly controlled or configured.
It is a service appliance (VM) available in various pre-defined sizes and is designed for running network and security services.
Who provides the NSX Edge nodes?
NSX Edge nodes are deployed by OVHcloud for your dedicated VMware environment and configured directly from the NSX manager. Up to 10 NSX Edge nodes may be added in a single cluster.
What are VMware's recommendations for sizing NSX Edge nodes?
We recommend sizing your Edge nodes correctly based on your architecture and the NSX services in your environment. Choose from 4 available sizes and deploy up to 10 NSX Edge nodes per cluster.
View the NSX Edge Sizing documentation here.
Can I use NSX to control a network outside of vSphere?
Yes, but there are some limitations. Check out this guide for more information about vRack and Hosted Private Cloud.
