Linux gives you the freedom to select your workplace environment, as well as security and tool integration. A selection of these operating systems are available to pre-install via the OVHcloud Control Panel, whether they are for hosting websites, databases, or business applications. You can also install the distribution you want.

Linux environment
Since Linux is open-source, it offers the advantage of being fully-customisable. You can install the elements required for your infrastructure to work properly. It is lighter and more flexible than a Windows Server environment, meaning that you can dedicate more resources to your applications. In most cases, your Linux dedicated server will not require any paid licences, so it is also more affordable.
Security
The design and active participation of the Linux community makes it a very secure operating system. With an extensive range of configurations, you can carefully mange your server’s access permissions. Regular updates also help your infrastructure avoid any potential security vulnerabilities. Your websites, databases and other applications are protected as a result.
A wide range of distributions
Although they are designed based on common foundations, there are a number of different Linux distributions. We offer the following distributions available to pre-install on your server: Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat Linux, Fedora, CentOS, Arch Linux, and CloudLinux. Depending on the requirements of the applications and infrastructures you would like to set up, you can opt for one of these, or install any other compatible distributions, directly on your dedicated server.
Linux licences
Most Linux licences are open source, and made available for free. Some distributions, like CloudLinux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, require a paid licence — which you need to sign up for in the order process. As a result, the price of your Linux server will depend on the price for renting the dedicated server. This price will be fixed depending on the RAM, CPU and disk space you want — and the licence price, if you opt for a paid distribution.
